History

We hope we can make you interested and curious about the past. We also aim to help you think for yourself — to learn to question what you are told and read.

GCSE

Pupils are prepared for OCR's History B Modern World specification J417. The topic on ‘International Relations, 1919–1939’ is covered and students complete a depth study on ‘Germany, 1918–1945’, a source-based study on ‘Britain, 1890–1918’ and a controlled assessment on ‘Russia and the USSR, 1905–1941’.

AS and A level

Pupils are prepared for the OCR specifications H106 (AS) and H506 (A2). There have been regular changes at St Paul’s to the content studied for AS and A2. Currently, all AS students study the British course, ‘From Pitt to Peel’. In addition, they sit a document-based paper, the topic being determined by set from a choice of three: ‘The Origins and Course of the French Revolution’, ‘The Origins of the American Civil War’, ‘Italian Unification’. For A2, ‘The Challenge of German Nationalism, 1789–1919’ is studied along with a unit for coursework on ‘Gladstone and Disraeli, 1865–1886’. Further details can be obtained on the OCR web-site.

After St Paul’s

Many former students have developed their study of History into distinguished academic careers:

Another Old Pauline, Adam Sisman, is the author of historical and other works, whilst Dan Snow is a TV presenter who has produced history programmes for the BBC.
