Politics and Economics Society

Polecon is the school’s joint Politics and Economics society which aims to promote a deeper understanding of politics and economics throughout the school.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to see a range of fascinating speakers –including several members of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee, academics, and executives of leading UK firms – talk on a wide range of subjects, and discuss current events with them. It is also a platform for pupils to talk and chair discussions on current affairs.

The society meets weekly in the Montgomery Room on Thursday lunchtimes and is run by a committee of students in conjunction with members of staff.

This academic year we are very pleased to be welcoming a range of speakers including Peter Riddell, former political editor for The Times and also Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries.

On the economic front, members recently heard about the latest contactless innovations from Carlos Menendez, Group Executive of Mastercard Consumer Products, and Rory Cullinan, former RBS boss, shared his views on the financial crash.

In addition to external speakers, the boys also present on topics of their interest and chair discussions. Recent presentations have been held on the migrant crisis, the American presidential elections and the future of China’s economy.
