Music Ensembles

Co-Curricular Music groups at St Paul's Juniors

At St Paul’s Juniors we believe in stretching the pupils to the very best of their ability, whilst maintaining a sense of fun.

School Choir (80+ pupils) currently sings at one morning service per term, Carol Services and School concerts.  They rehearse twice a week.  There is an annual choir outing.

Recital Choir (up to 30 pupils).  In addition to the commitments of the School Choir, the Recital Choir sings at special functions and outside concerts, often with members of the senior school chamber choir.  The Choir takes part in occasional concerts and services after the end of term.  They rehearse twice a week. Recital choir members must attend School Choir.

Junior Choir (40+ pupils). This choir performs in assemblies and in concerts, and the audition is not as exacting as for the other choirs.  Pupils may go on from this to the School Choir after audition. They rehearse once a week.

First Orchestra has about 50 players.  They rehearse on Tuesday Lunchtimes and Friday mornings. This flagship ensemble tackles challenging repertoire and the standard begins at Grade 3 and goes beyond Grade 8.

String Sinfonia meets on Friday mornings. It is a developmental ensemble for string players who will eventually graduate to the orchestra.

Wind Band rehearse on Wednesday lunchtimes. All woodwind and brass students should attend.

SPJ Jazz Has a traditional Big Band line-up of trumpets, trombones and saxophones along with a rhythm section of piano, bass, drums and guitar. Entry is by audition.

Smaller instrumental ensembles function when appropriate and time permits. At present there are ensembles of clarinets, saxophones, brass and Percussion. There are also two small chamber ensembles.
