    Public Exam Results, 2009

    A & AS

Results at A level and AS level broke all previous records this year, and were the best in the School's history - perhaps one of the better ways to mark our Quincentenary. There were no weak subject results and scores were universally high across the board. Interestingly, in a year when the story of the moment was pupils failing to get offers from universities, we had fewer pupils than ever who did not get to their university of first choice.

Our A level Results for 2009 are available. That page also includes a link to a summary of our A Level results for the last five years.

    GCSE

In GCSE we had to be content with our second-best ever results, although as the difference between this year and last year (when apparently we achieved the best GCSE results in the UK) was in the region of 1% we are not too distraught.

Every year the media is filled with 'Girls Do Better' stories. St Paul's School is an all-boy institution for pragmatic rather than philosophical reasons, but we are proud to say that these boys do as well as anyone, male or female.

League Tables and publication of results

One of the weaknesses of the league table culture is its tendency to focus on statistics. An education at St Paul's is not about percentages of A grades or whatever. It is about enabling pupils to get to their first choice of university. We have helped the overwhelming majority of Paulines to achieve their personal aims; it is the people we care about, not just the statistics.

We did not allow our results, good though they are, to be released for the compilation of the league tables that were published in August. This is because we believe the raw statistics are not an accurate guide to the quality of education available in a school, and that schools which would otherwise tend to top the league tables are in a unique position to take a lead in undermining them. Our partner in withdrawing from these league tables last year was Eton College.
