A moot at the Inner Temple

At the start of this month, St Paul’s took part in a moot (‘4. Law. The discussion of a hypothetical case by law students for practice; a hypothetical doubtful case that may be used for discussion.’ — OED).

Held at the Inner Temple and organised in conjunction with St Paul’s Girls’ School and Dexter Dias QC, teams from each school argued a right-to-die case, exploring intense and complex ethical and legal issues.

Our team organised their case entirely independently, using Facebook, and created a thoroughly professional bundle of documents to submit to the court, following a strict timetable.

There were assured performances in court from Ben Joseph and Zach Sosah (Year 12, Lower Eighth) — convincing in argument, quick-witted in response to the judge and forensic in their dissection of the opposition. Ben Ashraf, Ben Fraser and Ben Sando (all Lower Eighth) made lively, powerful and eccentric interventions.

The courtroom was packed until 8.30pm, the arguments on each side holding everyone’s attention. We were defeated by just a single point.
