Debating: Schools Mace
Congratulations to Ben Goldstein and Freddy Powell on winning the Schools Mace competition.
Organised by the English Speaking Union, the Schools Mace is probably the most prestigious competition in the debating calendar ‘open to school pupils from key stage 3 onwards’.
Ben and Freddy defeated some formidable opponents, including one team consisting of two England debaters. The judges took over an hour to reach their decision and eventually picked St Paul’s on a 3/2 split — a nail-biting experience.
Ben and Freddy will be travelling to Dublin later this month to represent England in the International Schools Mace competition.
