Hans Woyda Maths Competition
Congratulations to the team of Nicholas Leung (Year 13, Upper Eighth), James Aaronson (Year 12, Lower Eighth), Sahl Khan (Year 11, Sixth) and Theo Caplan (Year 9, Fourth) on winning the Hans Woyda Maths Competition.
The competition, entered by the top 64 school teams in the London area, consists of difficult problems in algebra, geometry, calculus and probability that are all answered against the clock.
In a tense final against a strong Harrow team, it was level-pegging until the team round. St Paul’s then pulled ahead with perfect solutions, extending their lead in the final rounds to win 52–45.
Two example questions, to be answered in 30 seconds:
- How many square numbers are factors of 11^11?
- How many integers are there for which the equation x^2+12x-n=0 has integer solutions?
