High Master’s sabbatical

The High Master, Dr Martin Stephen, will be on sabbatical leave from 1 January next year. At the end of last month, he wrote to parents:

St Paul’s is in the unusual situation of having appointed a successor as High Master, Professor Mark Bailey, who is available to give some of his time, with immediate effect, to working closely with the team that is taking the current rebuilding plans forward. Inevitably, the decisions that now have to be taken in this context need to be taken by the incoming, not the outgoing, leadership of the school.

Given the sense of urgency all involved feel in getting the project underway, it seems to be in the best interests of the school if the new team is able to start work as soon as possible. It has therefore been agreed that I may take sabbatical leave, starting on 1 January, 2011. The Surmaster will be acting High Master until my successor takes office, permanently, in September.

It has been a tremendous privilege to have been High Master of one of the truly great schools of England.
