Athletes all set for the season

Following a training camp held at Bath University during the recent break, the athletics team is ready for a fantastic track and field season.

The squad was able to take advantage of the University’s world-class facilities, including the 110m indoor track, throwing area and state of the art gym, as well as an outdoor track built to international standards.  A wide variety of different training and conditioning methods were employed: spinning sessions, Pilates classes … even daily ice baths (endured by all). Sport science sessions were an interesting addition to this year’s training. The boys were put through various reaction and speed tests, including sophisticated physiological tests (VO2 MAX) carried out in the University’s sports laboratory.

Throughout the week, the team shared the facilities with Olympic athletes as well as the Bath rugby squad. Highlights off the track included the delights of the Bath Comedy Walk and the intense rivalry amongst the staff in the traditional mini-golf competition.

The squad will compete at all the usual high profile events — the Achilles Relays, Cholmeley Shield, Lord Burghley Trophy and Radley Relays — as well as our normal fixtures at Tonbridge and Charterhouse. We also have high hopes for the boys at the Middlesex Schools’ and England Schools’ championships, where several athletes, including Hugo Fleming, Alastair Prenn and Sam Watson, have realistic medal hopes.
