Fives Varsity Match 2011

Back row: Ben Quarry (Sparrows), Cameron McKelvie, Charlie Emerton (Sparrows), George Barnes, Tom Chase, Sacha Esin, Luke Rowland. Front row: Ed Kay, Jonny Baker, Elliott Malone, Mark Hine

A rejuvenated Cambridge won this season’s Varsity Match by a clear margin, recording the first light-blue victory since their four-point win in 2006, and going some way to erasing the memory of the record margin of defeat in 2010.

The match was played at St Paul’s and Old Paulines provided a record-equalling nine players in the top (eight-a-side) match.

Jonny Baker (2003–8) had the misfortune to captain the losing side, but the key players for the winners were freshmen Ed Kay and Tom Chase (2005–10). Their victory in the British Universities’ doubles earlier in the season had established them as a force to be reckoned with. Both won their singles, and their four games of doubles could be seen as the difference between the sides.
