Football 2011

Football at St Paul’s goes from strength to strength, with 19 teams once again representing the school this year.

The weather certainly wasn’t on side. A fifth of all matches had to be scratched, but we played the rest of our 160 fixtures. Senior teams proved very strong. The 1st and 2nd XIs lost just one game each, the 1st XI to Hampton in a thrilling home encounter (1-0 in extra time) in the Independent Schools cup.

The 1st XI put this early setback behind them, securing some excellent results, helped in large part by the goal-scoring heroics of their centre-forward, Jonny Walker. Jonny has set a formidable school 1st XI record of 35 goals in the last 2 seasons.

Our other XIs, 3rd-7th, also had a very good season, with only had a handful of losses between them.

At U16 level, our strength in depth shone through and all teams did very well, the A team in particular. The U15s improved greatly as the season went on, gaining physical and mental strength, helped by their talisman and former English Prep Schools’ goalkeeper, Sam Howard. Our U14s faced some testing challenges, but finished with good performances against Dulwich and Latymer.
