Head of The Charles Regatta

The Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston is one of the largest rowing races in the world: over 9,000 world-class athletes and 300,000 spectators gather for a time-trial race run over two days. St Paul’s participated with both a IV and an VIII.

After starting well back in the field in 61st, our Youth IV (cox — Peter Burke-Smith; Leonardo Buizza, Alexander Dawson, Dominic Hopkins-Powell, Max Lawaczeck; coaches — Charlie Bourne, Mike Hennessey) finished 43rd out of a field of 85 boats from all over the world. This should earn them an invitation to race at next year’s event.

The Youth VIII (cox — Kais Ben Halim; Giovanni Bergamo-Andreis, George Horrell, Piers Kasas, William Kaufhold, Dominic Parr, Max Robinson, Erik Sullivan, Misha Wilcockson; coach — Bobby Thatcher) raced two divisions later and finished third overall, overtaking four crews in the process. They edged out Eton by the narrowest of margins (0.2s), were the fastest school crew and were one second off second place in a very tight set of results (just half a second between third and fifth place). A remarkable result at any time, this was a particularly thrilling way to mark our very first trip to the regatta.
