Lord Mayor’s Mile

Hugo Fleming (Sixth form) won the boys’ 13-14 race (age taken in April, when the London marathon and mini-marathon were run) in the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Lord Mayor’s Mile this month.

The race covered a mile route in the heart of the city’s financial district in front of the Lord Mayor and thousands of other spectators. Hugo completed the distance in 4 minutes 28 seconds.

It was something that I definitely aimed to do coming here. Coming down the finish, I saw I had the opportunity to really put in a kick and I won. I did the mini-marathon and this was very similar. It’s just brilliant to run in London — a great atmosphere and crowd.

I run with Walton Athletics Cub and I mostly do middle distance, like 800m and 1500m. I also do a bit of modern pentathlon, which is running, shooting, swimming, fencing and horse-riding. I’m aiming for a career in sport, so this is one of the steps along the way.

We posted an overview of Hugo’s career in August of this year.
