Easter Rome Trip
The Classics Society trip to Rome, which took place in the Easter holidays, was a resounding success from start to finish. Leaving on Monday 31st March and returning on Sunday 6th April, the intimate group of 16 8th formers and three very kind members of staff (Ms Butler, Mr Lambert and Mr Gazet) were able to explore Rome and its environs to the full, whilst becoming better acquainted with each other and having a lot of fun in the bargain.
We found that a week was plenty of time to see the main sights of Rome, such as the Forum, Colosseum and Vatican, and plenty of less well-known locations, such as the Caracalla baths and small churches. We were confronted by great contrasts - Roman villas and artefacts one moment, and a monastery the next. As we were all 8th formers, we were often at leisure to explore Rome in small groups; some chose to visit Trajan's markets, and others wandered through beautiful and diverse piazzas, drifting past such wonders as the Trevi fountain and glorious architecture. When not visiting fascinating museums and breathtaking cathedrals, there was time for two day-trips, to Ostia and Tivoli respectively. In addition to magnificent scenery, these provided a perfect setting for either a relaxed jaunt through the ruins, or a hectic rush to see all the places of interest. With all of us given the opportunity to take the holiday at a pace with which we were comfortable, everyone was able to gain from it, learn a great deal whilst absorbing the formidable culture that seems to seep through Rome.
It was a week of both frenetic activity and sun-soaked relaxation, with a combination that was to everybody's taste. We were tired by the end but inevitably fulfilled. No end of thanks must go to the three very brave teachers, for being such great sports, sources of knowledge and, of course, excellent company.
