Record number of Lower Eighths go for Gold
A record number of forty-four L8th formers converged on The Lake District to begin their preparation for the Expedition Section of the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award during the Easter holidays.
Based in Patterdale they were kept busy over the five days learning safety and self-reliance skills in the mountains. Included in the activities was a visit to the headquarters of the local Mountain Rescue Service: fortunately we didn't need their services but were reassured by the extensive set of high-tech equipment and the expertise of the entirely volunteer staff.
The trip ended with an independent full day's walk and camp. The next stage of preparations is a three day 'practice expedition' in South Wales after the finish of AS Level examinations.
