Fourth Formers and The Law

On Wednesday 20th June the whole fourth form welcomed 12 members of the Richmond Bench and one JP from North Surrey to guide them through a day of mock trials. After an introduction to work as a magistrate, court procedure and sentencing, two mock trials were conducted in each class. The defendants did not always receive the same verdict - it goes to show how important cross-examination is, and how difficult proof of a charge beyond reasonable doubt is (and should be!).

Next year we will attempt to achieve early disclosure of all the statements to both sides to help the lawyers to prepare more efficiently. The court reporters got to press within a week - interested readers might like to see their view of proceedings.......
