Midsummer Madness 2007
Summer 2007 will be remembered not only as one of Britain's wettest but also as the one when Royal Ascot, Wimbledon and Midsummer Madness all successfully took place under monsoon conditions.
Despite the weather Midsummer Madness proved that it takes more than a mere downpour to dampen the Pauline spirit. At 12 noon the crowds started to arrive and during the course of the afternoon over 1500 people came to Big Side to join in the end of term celebrations. While 32 teams played football, 13 SPS bands and a DJ entertained those who sampled the delicious food and drink in the marquee.
Outside there was a queue for the Laser Quest game all afternoon while others tried their hands at Archery, Climbing or Bungee Trampolining. The Plant Stall and Vintage Clothes tents provided novelty and bargains while other stalls with a summery theme sold cosmetics, jewelry, beach wear, baskets, espadrilles and flip-flops.
By 4.30pm the chocolate fountain was drying up, the cakes and spit roast lamb were long gone and the barbecues were cooling off. The last band played, the football finals were won, the raffle drawn and everyone agreed that it was perfectly possible to have a lot of fun on a rather wet day.
