The summer walking trip for 2007 returned to Ullapool where 3 years ago we'd enjoyed clear skies and long summer days. Alas July 2007 was one of the wettest on record but we still managed some excellent walking.
After a warm-up day on Cul Mor, Cul Beag and Ben More Coigach we chose to make the best of the good weather early in the week. One group tackled two Munros (Conival and Ben More Assynt, a total of nearly 1400m climbing and about 20km walking) while others took on the Quinag, a substantial peak with three lovely ridges radiating from a central col.
A wetter day followed with some scrambling on Stac Pollaidh rather hampered by the wet sandstone. Nevertheless, the heavily weathered towers and gullies made for fascinating views in the mist.
Slightly finer weather returned and a second day of Munro-bagging ensued: An Teallach for some, one of the classics of the west coast, and Sgurr Breac in the Fannichs for others.
Meanwhile another group climbed the isolated peak Suilven, involving long walks both in and out, and a short scramble to the double-topped ridge of this spectacular mountain.
Alas the weather then turned against us and we were limited to low level walks for the last two days, enjoying the waterfalls and the bird life.
Hearty thanks to Dr Leversha who organised the trip and once again sourced large quantities of prawns fresh off the boat.
