Groups & ensembles

St Paul’s has a busy schedule of music groups throughout the week: we encourage boys to participate in a variety of ensembles, all of which perform regularly in the many concerts which take place throughout the term. Groups are open to all boys whether or not they have music lessons in school.

Singing

  • The Concert Choir: anything up to 120 singers, performing throughout the yea, as well as at the annual John Colet Day Service in St Paul’s Cathedral. The choir is open to all, whether you’re experienced or just getting started.
  • The Chamber Choir: about 30 committed singers, singing weekly and at concerts, assemblies and special events. The choir also sings evensong in St Paul’s Cathedral in January along with one or two evensongs in other chapels or cathedrals. Membership is by audition.
  • Motley Croon is a barbershop group of six specialist singers (usually also members of Chamber Choir).

Chamber Music & Orchestral playing

  • Pianists, string players and others are introduced to the rich repertoire of chamber music from the Classical era to the present day.
  • The Full Orchestra can bring together up to 80 players. At times, it subdivides, forming groups such as the String Orchestra and the Wind, Brass and Percussion Ensemble
  • Wind Orchestra - a large orchestra of wind, brass and percussion instruments with a wide repertoire.
  • Brass Boyce and Trumpet Ensemble plays music from Renaissance to jazz.
  • The Saxophone Quartet and Ensemble, Flute ensembles, Clarinet Group and various Percussion groups.
  • Other combinations of instruments meet to rehearse and perform from time to time.

Jazz

There are regular jazz groups, including:

  • Jazz in the Atrium: several different genres of jazz played by about 40 boys in 6 or 7 ensembles. Each term there is a guaranteed opportunity to perform in the Atrium.
  • Groups have also been invited to play for several years at the famous Bull’s Head. The standard of improvisation is generally high, so involvement is by audition.

Rock

  • Rock bands and other groups organized by the boys meet regularly in the Foyer and elsewhere to rehearse and perform their own material.
