Pauline triumphs at the 2017 International Mathematical Olympiad

Upper Eighth pupil, Joe Benton, picks up a gold medal at the 2017 International Mathematical Olympiad, in Rio de Janeiro.

Joe was the top performer in the UK team of six and his score of 29/42 was joint seventh, among over 600 of the best school-age mathematicians from all over the world.

This is the fourth successive year that Joe represented the UK in these Olympiads, winning silver medals in each of the previous three years. Joe appeared on Radio 4’s Today programme on June 3, solving a problem set by GCHQ.  He is currently representing the UK in the International Informatics Olympiad in Tehran. Joe hopes to go to Trinity College, Cambridge, in October to read Mathematics.

In this year’s IMO the UK team came joint ninth overall and was the leading European nation, beating the Russian Federation and Hungary amongst others.
