On Sunday 23 March, our jazz musicians performed their annual jazz set at the 606 Club in Chelsea. A packed house enjoyed performances from our Quintet, Combo, Swing Band, and Big Band, featuring tunes by Nat Adderley, Stanley Turrentine, and Henry Mancini.
Highlights included the debut of the Pinstripe Trio, a self-directed group from the Lower Eighth, who were overheard rehearsing in the department and invited to play; two powerful vocal performances from Austin, who joined the Combo for two Stevie Wonder tracks; and the world premiere of a new composition by Nayan (Sixth Form), whose Fiesta Loca was performed by the Combo and will be included in his GCSE composition coursework.
By the time the Big Band brought the night to a close with Chick Corea’s fiendishly challenging Spain, the audience had experienced the full breadth of St Paul’s jazz and responded with enthusiastic applause.
