ASIST Suicide Intervention Workshops

Suicide is the leading cause of death in young people under the age of 35 in the UK. Over 200 children of school age are lost to suicide every year in the UK.

Despite this, we still don’t talk enough about suicide among children. Whilst it is encouraging to see moves to prioritise emotional health and mental wellbeing in schools, far fewer people are talking about suicide prevention. The stigma, silence and misconceptions around suicide mean that it is often not part of the conversation, and there is insufficient action in relation to suicide prevention training.

The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training program (ASIST) is considered to be the leading suicide prevention training program and it promoted by a number of leading suicide safety charities, including Papyrus. Many organ­isations that work with young people are now training a significant number of staff members in ASIST.

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two-day interactive workshop in suicide first aid. ASIST teaches participants to recognize when someone may have thoughts of suicide and work with them to create a plan that will support their immediate safety. By completing the ASIST course, participants are able to:

• Understand the ways that personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions
• Provide guidance and suicide first aid to a person at risk in ways that meet their individual safety needs
• Identify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and the actions required to implement it
• Appreciate the value of improving and integrating suicide prevention resources in the community at large
• Recognise other important aspects of suicide prevention including life-promotion and self-care
