Busy Start to the Sporting Year

It has been a busy and successful start to the sporting year at St Paul’s, with the announcement of our new Cricket Captain and fixtures getting underway in golf and rugby.

Cricket

More accolades for Fergus de Mestre (Upper Eighth), who was the top wicket-taker nationally in school cricket last season. This is an excellent achievement and augurs well for the 2027 season, when Fergus will take on the role of St Paul’s Captain of Cricket alongside his club and county commitments.

Golf

The SPS golf season got off to an excellent start on September 9 in the ISGA Matchplay Competition at Royal Mid Surrey. Shiv Ahluwalia (Upper Eighth), Noah Guest (Sixth Form) and Rahul Nigam (Upper Eighth) faced St Benedict’s in a highly competitive match, securing an impressive 3-0 victory. Rahul won on the 17th hole, while Shiv and Noah both secured their matches on the final hole. The team now progresses to the quarter-final, where they will face either Westminster or UCS.

Rugby

SPS faced Hampton and Tiffin on September 12 in a busy round of fixtures. Against Hampton, the 1st XV were beaten 24-5, while the 2nd XV and U16 also suffered defeats despite spirited performances. The U15A responded strongly after a difficult first half, eventually reaching 50 points before the referee brought the game to an early conclusion. The U14A provided a decisive victory, beating Hampton 26-12 for their first win in SPS colours.

Against Tiffin on September 12, the U14B produced an excellent second-half fightback against Tiffin A, but narrowly lost 17-19 after trailing 7-19 at half time. The U15B faced a challenging fixture against Tiffin A, while the U16B produced an impressive display of counter-attacking rugby to secure a 43-10 victory.
