Chemistry Olympiad 2025

In January, 152 Paulines took part in Round 1 of the Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad.  The results were announced this week and they were the best ever for SPS.

In the paper, pupils had to work out the synthesis of agarospirol (a perfume popular in the UAE – this year’s International Olympiad hosts) and also used Raman spectroscopic data (the paper celebrated C V Raman, the inventor of the technique and the first Asian to win a Nobel Prize of any sort) to analyse carbon nanotubes.

This cohort set a new school record for gold awards won (48, beating 46 last year) and silver awards won (72, beating 66 last year). In total, Paulines won 144 awards. Special congratulations are due to Adavya Goyal (Lower Eighth), who finished second of over 16,000 entrants in the competition and was subsequently invited to Round 2 and a selection camp for the UK IChO team in Nottingham over Easter.
