In January, 147 of the Lower and Upper Eighth Form chemists took part in the first round of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Olympiad competition.
The results were released at the beginning of March and SPS pupils set two new records for the school: they won more awards than ever before (145 in 2023, beating 135 in 2022) and more Gold awards than ever before (38 in 2023, beating 25 in 2019, which represents a 52% increase on the old record).
It was also great to note that every member of the Upper Eighth who took part won an award and that five of the Lower Eighth entrants won Gold awards in a competition designed to stretch those in their second year of A Level study. To earn these results, pupils had to analyse the thermodynamics of rocket fuels, the synthesis and decomposition of vitamin E in vape fluid and also the fragrance and acidity of cheese (some examples can be found below).
