During Wednesday lunch, seven imaginatively named teams, comprising 34 Lower Eighth students, gathered in Chemistry Lab 4 to compete for the honour of representing SPS next February in the Chemistry Race—a national competition where students race against the clock to solve chemistry problems as a team.
The teams had 30 minutes to answer as many of the 15 available questions as possible, with maximum points awarded for correct answers on the first attempt and diminishing returns for subsequent attempts. “The Head-On Overlap Between Two Orbitals” emerged as the most accurate team, answering all of their questions correctly. However, “Based” proved faster, earning more points by answering a greater number of questions. Meanwhile, “My Chemical Bromance” won the award for the best team name.
The “Based” team, consisting of Alex Barea, Zubin Maudgil, Tolga Mardin, Samuel Christie, and Adavya Goyal, will go on to represent the school in the spring.
