Colet Fellows 2022-23

St Paul’s maintains a busy US Universities Department. The school has an established history of leavers studying in the United States, with pupil interest growing year-on-year. The US Universities Department also offers recent US graduates the opportunity to work in the department through the Colet Fellowship.

For an entire academic year, Colet Fellows reside and work at the school. They have a particular responsibility for helping interested pupils craft their application essays, while serving as a general resource for Paulines on US college life. Colet Fellows also give occasional presentations to pupils and families, while participating in annual department events.

The Colet Fellows are also given the opportunity to develop mentorship skills more directly, by selecting an academic department based on their undergraduate experience and teaching classes in that subject. This provides an excellent opportunity for graduates to gain teaching experience prior to attaining a Master’s Degree. Colet Fellows are free to engage with the school beyond the classroom, assisting with student clubs and activities ranging from music and sports to debating and film.

Colet Fellows are generously supported during their time at St Paul’s by our Colet Foundation, based in the USA. To find out more about donating from the US via the Colet Foundation, please click here.

Our Colet Fellows for the 2022/23 academic year are Spencer Goldberg and Joseph Barile.

Spencer Goldberg is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in Political and Social Thought and Philosophy. While at UVA, he worked with a law professor researching, writing and editing the Teacher’s Manual for the first casebook on the law of the police. Spencer has numerous academic accolades and is an experienced presenter. Among other roles, he gave tours at Monticello –  the home of Thomas Jefferson – and at an African American history centre. Spencer was heavily involved with UVA admissions with supervisory responsibility for 150 student guides, and serving on the Provost’s Admissions Advisory Committee. Spencer is interested in a career in global ethics, and in cultivating a future generation of rigorous ethical thinkers and practitioners. At St Paul’s, in addition to assisting Upper Eighth students with their US applications, Spencer is teaching Philosophy and coaching basketball.

Joseph Barile has a degree in Neuroscience from Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania. Joseph’s outstanding academic record led to extensive research and work experience opportunities including as a teaching assistant in biology at Swarthmore, and as a research assistant in a UPenn Medical School Lab. During a pandemic gap year, Joseph worked as an emergency department scribe at Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia, shadowing physicians and completing electronic medical records. Joseph worked for Swarthmore Admissions in multiple capacities, including as a tour guide, intern, and Admissions Fellow (interviewer). Joseph was the captain of the Swarthmore soccer team and a sports writer for the Phoenix newspaper, where he also served on the editorial board.  Joseph was also selected as a Resident Assistant for first year students. Joseph’s career goal is to be a physician. At St Paul’s, in addition to assisting Upper Eighth students with their applications to the US, he is working with the Biology Department.
