Durlacher, Eric Alexander Ogilvie

Unit: 5th Battalion attached 2nd Battalion Worcester Regiment

Cause of death: Died of wounds

From the Pauline Magazine: Captain Durlacher was hit in the hand during the first charge, but he refused to leave his men and remained in command of the company until shot dead later in the day. Especially regretted was the death of Captain E. A. O. Durlacher, the hero of the Clery raid. A brilliant young leader, of quick wit and outstanding personality, he was one of the most memorable of the many excellent officers who came to the Regiment from that nursery of brave men, the Artists’ Rifles.

His Commanding Officer wrote : ” He was an officer in whom I placed implicit reliance… He was killed in the forefront with his men; despite the fact that he was at the time wounded, he would not leave the line… He is a very great loss to the battalion.”
