From the Pauline Magazine: At school he won the bronze medal for gymnastics, and after leaving he sang a solo in at least one school concert. He took his dental course at Guy’s Hospital, served for many years with the Tower Hamlets Engineers (T.F.), and from there obtained his captaincy to serve during the South African War as a dental surgeon. with the R.A.M.C. He was gazetted captain in the K.R.R.C. in September 1914.
