On the 27 and 28 June, St Paul’s participated in the ECF National Schools Chess Final against 25 other schools. This is an incredibly prestigious competition and to reach the final is in itself a massive achievement for the team.
After missing the first round due to travel issues, the team were defeated 5-1 by third-seeded Haberdashers’. After a motivational talk given by team captain Louis, the team managed to bounce back and ended the first day with a 6-0 victory over Bristol Grammar.
The second day of play began with a match against RGS Guildford. Despite a win from Louis and draws from Chris and Henry, the team narrowly lost 4-2. The final round was a 5-1 win against King Edward’s, with four wins and two draws to finish the tournament in equal fifth place.
