Eighth Form study trip to Munich

A report by Maxim Skupsch, German Language Assistant

In the last week of the Autumn Term, seven German students from the Lower and Upper Eighth forms took part in an exchange to Munich, Germany to experience some German culture and practice their German with their exchange partners. The week was packed with opportunity to do both and the weather from the weeks before had made sure that it was all set in a snowy winter wonderland.

Each pupil stayed with their exchange partner’s family and spent the days exploring Munich and its surroundings as a group. On a few occasions, the exchange partners joined their English friends and showed them around Tollwood Festival, a vast Christmas market, and took them bowling.

In the first few days, the group got to experience a school day at Otto von Taube Gymnasium, a city tour with a visit to some of the most significant historic places in the inner city, and a tour of the Aying Brewery. Having gained an impression of Munich, the group took to Augsburg to visit the Fuggerei, the Jewish museum and to enjoy a traditional German lunch at Ratskeller, as well as taking the train to castle Herrenchiemsee, which arguably proved to be one of the highlights of the trip.

The pupils spent the weekend with their exchange partners, where some went to the BMW World museum, some went camping and others went to castle Neuschwanstein. The group concluded the week with a collective dinner. Before making their way to the airport, the group made a final trip to the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich.
