European Week of Languages 2022

This year, the Languages and Classics Faculty celebrated the European Day of Languages with a busy week of events and competitions for pupils.

The week was a celebration of the European and world languages spoken by members of our community and of the European languages taught at St Paul’s. The week also provided an opportunity for pupils to take part in  further language taster lessons, enjoy culturally immersive activities and enjoy in-depth workshops.

Throughout the week, the whole school community enjoyed a selection of French, German, Italian and Hispanic dishes at lunchtime in the Dining Hall. Individual events included the lively and hotly-contested House Pétanque, Italian Slapzi tournament, Classical Games, the Classical bake-off, and taster language lessons in Maltese, Biblical Hebrew and Portuguese.

Pupils were able to enjoy culinary immersion with a Spanish tapas tasting, Italian gelato workshop, Sicilian cannoli making and Italian tiramisù making. Throughout the week, classicists were able to make their attempts at the daily Latin Wordle competition. Finally, Eighth Form linguists attended a BFI online event on a piece of French cinema, and a translation masterclass, run in partnership with St Paul’s Girls’ School and led by translation specialist, Mr Dows-Miller (Oxford University) and a French breakfast.
