The Royal Air Force was formed in the midst of war to bring together resources, people and knowledge. At the start of the First World War the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service had approximately 200 aircraft between them; at the end of 1918 there were 20,000. In four years the capability of the aircraft and the men and women was pushed and tested in ways that no-one had previously envisioned. It set a precedent for the next nine decades.
