Topical Tuesdays: Mental Health Awareness with Tom Hayhoe OP, 1969-73

05 OCTOBER 2021

7:30pm

Zoom Webinar

The Topical Tuesday series sees guest speakers from the St Paul’s Community share their take on the current environment.

In the run up to World Mental Health Day, Tom Hayhoe OP, 1969-73, will talk about mental health from his perspective as chair of West London NHS Trust, which provides community and mental health services in Hammersmith and Fulham, Ealing and Hounslow and operates Broadmoor High Secure Hospital.  He is keen to demystify mental health, help people understand that mental health is an integral part of their overall health, and encourage them to take care of their own mental health and of those around and them, including making best use of the services that the NHS provides.

Tom’s interest in healthcare was sparked by a course in health economics and policy taken when, as a result of an economics A level taken at St Pauls, he secured exemption from a microeconomics course required when studying for an MBA at Stanford as a Harkness Fellow and had to fill a gap in his academic programme.  This led ultimately to a series of board roles in the NHS in West London which he held alongside a private career as a consultant with McKinsey and then as a retailer with WH Smith and Gamestation.  He was appointed chair of West Middlesex University Hospital in 2010 and then chair of West London Mental Health Trust (subsequently renamed West London NHS Trust) in 2015.  He has chaired Fitness to Practise panels for the Nursing and Midwifery Council for the past nine years and was a trustee of Versus Arthritis (previously Arthritis Research UK) between 2012 and 2020.

Early in his career, Tom was heavily involved in politics, as President of Cambridge Students Union, advisor to a cabinet minister, and parliamentary candidate for the Social Democratic Party.  However, reflecting his roles in public service, he has been scrupulous in his political independence for many years.

Tom has been a keen sailor throughout his life, was captain of sailing at St Pauls and served as vice commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club.  He has skippered a yacht racing non-stop around Britain and Ireland and competed in national, European and World championships in a wide variety of boats.
