The Topical Tuesdays series sees guest speakers from the St Paul’s Community share their take on the current environment.
This Pride Month, for this Topical Tuesdays talk hosted by St Paul’s Head of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion, Tyler John, we will see Dr James Croft discuss Queer Liberation Then – and Now! For decades LGBTQIA+ people have been fighting for their rights, making extraordinary gains in a relatively short time. Now, however, the tide seems to be turning, as trans people are increasingly scapegoated by politicians the world over and nations that seemed to be making progress backslide. Activist, philosopher, and Humanist chaplain James Croft will tell the story of how queer people have asserted their dignity and changed the world – and how we can continue to fight the rising tide of bigotry.

Dr James Croft (MA Cantab, EdD Harvard) is the University Chaplain and Lead Faith Advisor for the University of Sussex, and the first Humanist to lead a chaplaincy at a UK university. Formerly, as Senior Leader of the Ethical Society of St. Louis, he led one of the largest Humanist congregations in the world. James has dedicated his life to helping people ask the big questions – Why are we here? How should we treat each other? Where are we going? – and is a popular speaker on matters of religion, ethics, and philosophy in the UK and internationally. He lives in Brighton with his fabulous drag queen husband Kolten and their darling chihuahua Ella.
