Topical Tuesdays: Liberating Belsen Concentration Camp with John Wood

25 JANUARY 2022

7:30pm

Zoom Webinar

The Topical Tuesdays series will see guests speakers from the St Paul’s Community share their take on the current environment.

In commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January, we will be joined by John Wood on the 25 January. John will share the story of the liberation of Bergen-Belsen and the part his father, Leonard Berney (1933-37), played in this. The talk will focus on Leonard’s World War II experiences, most notably the part he played in defending London during the Blitz and in helping to save thousands of lives at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Hosted by Sally-Anne Huang, High Master.

Speaker:

John Wood – On leaving Cranleigh School, John gained a BSc from the University of Surrey in Hotel Management. After briefly working in the hotel industry, he switched to IT as sales director for a company that wrote software for Lloyds of London. Since 2018, he has run his own social media management firm. Recently, he branched out into the film world and is currently making documentaries, one about the legendary pianist, Nicky Hopkins who played with the Beatles and The Rolling Stones, and another about his father, Belsen liberator and Old Pauline, Leonard Berney OP, 1933-37.
