Upper Eighth Parents’ The National Gallery Guided Tour

29 APRIL 2022

The National Gallery, WC2H 7HA

The collection at the National Gallery has supreme examples of paintings which follow the development of European art. Beginning with the medieval “gold ground” painting we will look at paintings by Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo and discuss subject matter, patronage and technique. We will look at the powerful images created by Caravaggio and Rubens and compare them with images made in Holland with fine examples of domestic interiors by Vermeer and introspective self-portraits by Rembrandt. For the 18th century we will look at English paintings, the English Golden Age, with portraits the dominant genre but also landscapes by Turner and Constable. Finally, the Impressionists, Degas and Monet, the Expressionists, Van Gogh and into the 20th century with Matisse and Picasso.

The Tour will be led by Hattie Bennett, who has a degree in Art History and a masters in Dec Arts. She then worked for years in the art world as a curator and after this, for a commercial gallery. For the last five years, she has been leading small private groups around museums and galleries, as well as holding art talks.

Tickets are £20 (+ booking fee). Tickets are limited to 11 and will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Tickets are non-refundable, unless they can be resold.

Meeting Point: 12 St Martin’s Street, WC2H 7HA, at the Entrance to the Sainsbury Wing.
