Firefly Racing raced at Ford Dunton on Saturday. Dunton is a difficult track due to the tricky chicane made out of hay bales at one end.
In race 2 the driver had to make a difficult split-second decision – the car just in front had crashed in the chicane, so should he crash into the back of them (there was no time to stop without hitting the back of their car) or steer into the hay bale to the right. He rightly chose the hay bale, but this destroyed the front right upright of the car. The team brought the car back to the paddock and with 15 minutes had straightened and repaired the upright and got back out on track, however losing their comfortable first place lead. George Lyster drove the newly repaired car and achieved the fastest lap of the day, beating the previous record by 4 seconds!
The team came second overall, bringing home our second podium trophy this season, but the first trophy in this class. This means that FF03 has automatically qualified for the International Final in October. The team also wowed the judges with their FF05 prototypes, winning the Ford Engineering Award. The judge from Ford said, “to be honest, their engineering is so advanced it’s a little bit frightening”.
