Reuben (Upper Eighth) has won the Julia Wood Prize for his essay ‘False Fathers and Rural Realities: To What Extent Were the Mexican Wars of Independence a Genuine Pursuit for Independence?’.
The prize, organised by St Hugh’s College, Oxford, recognises the best extended History essay written by Eighth Form historians across the country. Entrants are free to choose and research their own titles, and Reuben’s essay demonstrated meticulous interaction with complex historiography and a real flair for translation – indeed, he translated original primary sources himself out of Spanish.
This achievement continues a strong record of success for Paulines in the competition. Recent years have seen Dermot Christmas (2024) and Fergus Walsh (2023) named runners-up, while Alex Gong (2022) took the spoils.
