House Choral Competition 2025
After hours of rehearsals, and perhaps even a little last-minute panic, the annual House Choral finally took place on Monday 29 September, a tradition that began with the inception of the Houses at St Paul’s.
Through careful inspection, you would have noticed more colour around the school on the day, with even a staff member proudly sporting orange shoelaces to signal his House allegiance. There was also the unmistakable whistle of Coldplay’s Yellow echoing in the Atrium as pupils climbed the stairs – some Fourth Formers trying to get in tune for the big performance. The judging criteria were delightfully straightforward: singing quality (of course), performance commitment, presentation, and the ever-important House spirit.
This year’s esteemed panel of judges included the High Master, ensuring that every note was under expert scrutiny. To the few neutrals in the 300-strong audience, the competition was fierce, with barely a hair’s breadth separating the contenders.
In the end, the podium looked like this: Blurton claimed third place with a daring performance of Queen’s We Are the Champions; Gilks came second, rocking out with Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer; and taking the crown was Harrison House with a show-stopping rendition of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. Perhaps the orange shoelaces brought them some extra luck!
