First LEGO League/Tech Challenge – North London Regional Tournament

On Saturday, 15 March, the First LEGO League and First Tech Challenge teams competed, hoping to qualify for the national competitions later in the year.

First LEGO League

The Fourth Form team (The Resurrections) performed well, especially considering they had lost two-thirds of their team in the lead-up to competition day. They finished 5th out of 13 teams in the Robot Game. The team comprised Arun Arulchandran and Ayan Roy.

The Fifth Form team (The Hammersmith Hurricanes) worked incredibly hard in preparation for the tournament, and their efforts paid off. They topped all their categories, winning the overall competition and securing a place in the national finals in May. They will be one of 80 teams competing to become the best First LEGO League team in the UK and ultimately represent the country in the international final. The team comprised Lucas Aydinoglu, Vihaan Sinha, Sharvesh Sivashankar, Ishan Sood, Olle Van Angeren, and Lucien Wong.

First Tech Challenge

The SPS inaugural team (SParkS) performed impressively. They had already impressed the judges with their engineering portfolio, which showcased their STEM community work and fundraising efforts throughout the year.

Despite a broken part in their first match, their robot still performed well. At the end of the day, they won the Design Award (for the overall design and manufacture of their robot) and finished 2nd in the Inspire Award (for their overall work during the year). This second-place Inspire finish qualifies them for the national competition in June.

The team comprised: Arnav Bhargava (Sixth Form), Maxence Borms (Sixth Form), Kshitij Dubey (Sixth Form), Manuel Fernandez Otero-Novas (Sixth Form), James Gronow (Sixth Form), Azmere Hassan (Sixth Form), Artem Lipko (Lower Eighth), Hanyu Peng (Lower Eighth), Alex Reynolds (Sixth Form), Arié Sabbah (Sixth Form), Dylan Siow (Fourth Form), William Standing (Upper Eighth), Joseph Sternberg (Sixth Form), Francesco Verri (Lower Eighth) and Jack Wang (Upper Eighth).

Special mention should be given to Kshitij Dubey and James Gronow who were instrumental in the design, mechanics and coding of the robot.
