St Paul’s Athletics Club earned a creditable fourth place at the Lord Burghley Trophy at Eton in May, in spite of fielding a significantly under strength squad due to injuries and GCSE commitments.
The Senior side performed exceptionally well and finished in second place, having already secured a first equal place at the Guy Butler Shield earlier in the season. Special mentions to Paul Calderon, Martin Noe-Nordberg, David Nartey, Nicky Crompton, Max Buckley, Ben Tatters, Gian Tosti Di Valminuta and Oliver Hill for winning their respective events. Nicky Crompton, Max Buckley, Oliver Hill and Paul Calderon also excelled in the 4x400m relay finishing in first place by a very comfortable distance, just as they did at the Guy Butler Shield at Harrow.
The Inters did incredibly to finish in fifth place considering all but one of the team were Fifth Form boys. The Juniors also competed well finishing in sixth place in spite of the team being blighted by injuries.
However the two outstanding performances of the day came from Harry Grindle and Gregory Zoppos. Both Harry and Gregory broke the school records in the Inter 200m and Junior 300m with times of 22.3 seconds and 38.9 seconds respectively. Congratulations to them both.
In all, it was a very good all round performance from the team. The boys gave absolutely everything throughout the day and were a credit to the School.
