The trip involved visits to tertiary institutions in the United States, from New Hampshire to New Jersey, with the goal of understanding the wide range of institutions and educational experiences the United States offers.
Niki McInteer (Head of US Universities) reports:
Having learned about US universities and their admissions through talks and a 4-week seminar at St Paul’s, a cohort of 9 pupils departed for Boston on 12 April to explore a swath of the East Coast and visit eleven different American universities.
The group landed in Boston and made the 2-hour drive north to New Hampshire to visit Dartmouth College in Hanover, followed by a visit to Amherst College, one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the US, in west-central Massachusetts. The next day was filled with visits to universities in the Boston area: Tufts University in Medford (where students enjoyed a buffet lunch in the dining hall), Harvard University in Cambridge, and Boston College in Chestnut Hill.
The next day the group visited two Ivy League institutions: Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island and Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. We learned about university traditions, academic offerings, and what life would be like as a student. A particular highlight of our Yale visit was meeting Handsome Dan, the bulldog mascot.
New York City was up next, and the group enjoyed a sunny tour downtown at New York University before heading up to Morningside Heights to tour Columbia University. In between and after visits, the pupils had time to explore Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and Central Park.
The last day was spent having a look around Princeton University in New Jersey, where we learned about the university’s offerings, as well as the university’s connection to the American Revolutionary War. The last university visit was at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where pupils were able to see what kind of experience a large, public university could offer.
Our pupils benefitted tremendously by having the opportunity to get to know these various campuses in greater detail, and they all left with a distinct impression of what is on offer in the US.
