SPS hosted a German theatre festival in association with the Goethe-Institut London on 29 January in the Dorfman Theatre.
Schools from across London sent teams of pupils to perform a ten-minute piece of theatre in German, fortified by a traditional German Abendbrot at the interval. Judges included representatives from the Goethe-Institut, the Office of the Free State of Bavaria in the UK, the National Consortium of Language Teaching, as well as SPS Administrator Dagmar Smith.
It was a fantastic evening celebrating the German language, and the standard of performance from all participating schools was outstanding. The SPS team performed an extract from Max Frisch’s Biedermann und die Brandstifter and was ably led by Ethan (Upper Eighth) as director and Sam (Upper Eighth) as lead actor in the role of Mr Biedermann. Their skill, commitment, and leadership of the younger pupils were particularly impressive, especially given that the production was prepared in just under two weeks.
They were joined by Aadhil (Lower Eighth), who brought real vitality to the role of Mrs Biedermann, Kaan (Sixth Form) as the arsonist Eisenring, and Henry and Sehwan (Fifth Form) as Schmitz and Anna respectively. Congratulations to all the SPS pupils on an astonishing achievement, not only for the very high standard of their German, but also for their acting and teamwork. Their impressive performance earned them the award for Best Ensemble.
