Recent rain and wind cleared at Harrow School as three of our finest athletes, Max, Cameron and Benjy, lined up to represent Richmond at this year’s Middlesex School Championships. This race also acts as a trial race to gain qualification to represent Middlesex at the English School Championships, the children’s equivalent to the Men’s and Women’s National Cross Country Championships! All three boys ran superbly, but it was a tall order to finish near the front, especially as Cameron and Benjy were racing against boys in the year above.
All three boys stuck to their game plan, which was to commit to the pace but also to be sensible and not go off too hard. 5000m later, Cameron sprinted into the finishing funnel in 4th position, gaining an automatic qualification to represent Middlesex at the English School Championship, a first for St Pauls in ten years!
Fifteen seconds or so later, Benji gritting his teeth and driving his arms through to the finishing line, running the race of his life, finished 7th with Max not too far behind in 9th position. A truly incredible performance by all three boys. Nine athletes in total will represent Middlesex at the English Schools, so in the meantime, we will be keeping our fingers crossed both Benji and Max will be joining Cameron.
This is by far the most significant cross country performance the school has achieved, and Mr Maguire and myself are beyond proud of the boys. Well done, Cameron, Benji and Max.
