On 17 January, SPS and SPGS jointly hosted the eighth Model United Nations (MUN) conference, welcoming more than 220 pupils from 20 different schools. Delegates represented 38 countries across six United Nations committees, engaging in high-level debate on a wide range of global issues.
Topics discussed included securing borders in the Democratic Republic of Congo; Iranian nuclear proliferation and nuclear law reform; forced migration as a tool of hybrid warfare; the motives and implications of large-scale international development projects such as the Qatar World Cup; debt sustainability and economic dependency within the Belt and Road Initiative; the resettlement of climate refugees; ensuring humanitarian access in Sudan; the global opioid crisis; and the protection of healthcare workers in conflict zones.
In addition, the Historical Committee, set in 1938 and 1950, debated the Sudetenland Crisis and the Korean War. The conference concluded with a General Assembly ‘Crisis’ debate centred on a natural disaster in Kashmir.
The conference was directed and organised by Cillian Bramham, Luca Orlandi, Adrian Siniscalco and Aarav Kushagra from SPS, alongside Martha Vaisey from SPGS. Committees were chaired by Max Bauer, Azmere Hassan, Arie Sabbah, Teddy Niedringhaus, Matthew Biggs, Alex Khosrowpanah-Falcone and Lorenzo Del Freo from SPS, with deputy chairs Caleb Irons, Dilan Makkar and Kaysan Lakha. Additional support was provided by Siya Agrawal, Sophia Boysan and Lulu Burke from SPGS.
Huge thanks go to all the students involved for their outstanding organisation, professionalism and efficiency, as well as to Mr Skidmore and Mr Garnett from SPS and Mrs Budden from SPGS for their invaluable support throughout the day.
