In the Spring Term, over 130 modern linguists submitted entries for the Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators 2025. This is a prestigious national competition run by The Queen’s College (Oxford University) for pupils studying French, German, Italian and Spanish at GCSE and A Level.
The competition is inspired by the life and work of the great translator Anthea Bell, who is famous for her translations of French, German, and Danish literary works including her translations into English of the Astérix series.
The prize aims to promote language learning across the UK and to motivate pupils in their study of modern foreign languages by engaging them in translation tasks from their studied languages into English. In doing so, pupils are putting the language skills learned in the classroom into practice and reflecting creatively about how to overcome challenges such as cultural references, metre or rhyme.
Congratulations to all of the pupils who entered the prize at St Paul’s School and particular congratulations should go to the following pupils whose translations have been shortlisted by the Modern Foreign Languages faculty at St Paul’s for entry to the national competition.
