On the weekend of 16 – 17 September, Fifth Form pupil Greg put in a stellar performance at the English Schools’ Combined Events Championships where he finished in 8th place in the U15 pentathlon; an impressive feat considering he has only been competing in the event for four months.
The event, held in Boston (Lincs), saw Greg improve his previous best by 238 points, scoring 2753 points overall. Highlights included a scintillating 80m hurdles time of 11.62 seconds (a new school record), which ranks him 12th nationally in this event, and a new personal best (and school record) in the long jump of 5.83m. His other performances were 10.21m in the shot, 1.56m (an equal PB) in the high jump and 2:15.03 in the 800m.
Greg’s success follows on from that of Sixth Form boy Philip, who won the U17 Surrey Octathlon Championships the previous weekend. Philip also achieved a new personal best score of 4125 points, with highlights including new individual event PBs in the hurdles (15.4 seconds), high jump (1.77m) and discus (33.58m). As well as winning the competition, this score puts him 30th on the UK U17 rankings (an age group that he is still eligible for next season).
