Pupils Harry Grindle and Gregory Zoppos have both qualified for the upcoming English Schools’ Championships.
Harry Grindle has qualified for the National Schools 200m final for the third year in succession. This is all the more remarkable given that he has been carrying a hip injury through most of the season; forcing him to miss all but one of the school athletics meetings leading up to the Middlesex Championships. Harry won the Intermediate 200m final at the event with a recorded time of 22.9s, qualifying for the English Schools’ Championships in Birmingham on 8 July.
Gregory Zoppos has also qualified for the national final of the English Schools’ Championships in the junior boys’ pentathlon, and in doing so also broke the Junior School Long Jump record with a jump of 5.71m. His performance of 2472 points placed him seventh in the South-East Championships, but this score is actually 17th best nationally and so he has been invited as a ‘high scoring non-automatic qualifier’ to compete at the national championships in Boston, Lincolnshire on the weekend of 16 & 17 September.
Congratulations to both Harry and Gregory and we wish them much success in their respective finals at the English Schools’ Championships.
