Rugby Report – 7 October

A report by Mr Andy Maguire, Head of Rugby

Huge congratulations to the U16As on an excellent home performance, which resulted in a 16-8 win. I am extremely pleased for this current U16 squad as having endured several injuries and tough results early on this season, their determination to keep improving has seen them rewarded with an excellent win over a team that only last year had beaten them quite comfortably. Commiserations to the U16Bs who sadly lost a hard-fought contest by 19-29.

In what is becoming a recurring segment in these reports, the Under 15s continued their winning ways, completing an impressive clean sweep of victories within the year group. Huge congratulations to all the U15 players and staff for another impressive set of well-earned results.

Unfortunately, the senior away results didn’t go in our favour, with the 1st XV, 2nd XV and 3rd XV all losing their matches. The 1st XV had the majority of possession but once again were not clinical enough with the ball in hand, and in the face of RGS’s outstanding defence, this lack of cutting edge would prove costly. Again, unforced errors cost us heavily and RGS were able to make the most of their opportunities, ultimately inflicting a 22 – 5 defeat. Nevertheless, the 1st XV are improving with every game, and although there is still plenty of work to be done, we mustn’t forget that the majority of the team is in the Lower Eighth and will be much stronger next year having had a season of 1st XV rugby under their belts. The U14A team also lost a hard-fought game, but the B, C and D teams all earned emphatic wins, ensuring that some spoils were brought back from RGS.

Overall, the strong results over the day are reflective of the hard work put in by all the players and staff of SPS Rugby Club, and all teams, whether victorious or not, are worthy of plaudits for their consistently impressive attitude to the game.
